Common Ground Health Clinic Mission Statement

The Common Ground Health Clinic is a non-profit organization that provides free quality health care for the greater New Orleans community, and develops and provides programs to address community health care needs through collaborative partnerships.

Medical Director: Dr. Ravi Vadlamudi
Information about volunteering at the clinic

March 20, 2006 Update
The Common Ground Health Clinic is run by volunteers and we appreciate your participation. Please read this page and History of The Clinic before contacting the Volunteer Coordinator to register.

For Out-Of-State health professional volunteers, The Louisiana Dept. of Health and Hospitals certified the Common Ground Health Clinic, so you can get credentialed to volunteer with us.

Staffing Needs
Due to our heavy patient load, we are seeking the ongoing presence of: 4 MDs/ NPs ; 6 RNs/LPNs/CNAs; local Mental Health Counsellors and Social Workers; Unit Coordinators; a Pharmacist, and a kitchen manager.
We also use 4th year Med Students who HAVE COMPLETED their Internal Medicine or Family Medicine rotation and have clinical experience, Physical Therapists, Massage Therapists, counsellors, experienced Medics/EMTs, and herbalists who do not need to be licensed. We go on house calls, to satellite & mobile clinics and do health education.

We also have a need for volunteers such as a secretary, materials manager, and a development director.

If you are not local and do not meet our catagories for volunteers, sorry, you may not be able to volunteer with us. Please check with Common Ground Relief for volunteer opportunities .

Minimum Stays for out of town volunteers
Because of the logistical difficulties of orienting and housing out of town volunteers, and because we prefer local resident volunteers, there are minimum stays we require. These may change depending on our volunteer census.

MDs/NPs: 3 days for Internal Med or Family Practice, we discourage specialists without solid Internal or Family medicine experience.
MS III: case specific. If with an MD, OK.
MS IVs: min 4 working days in clinic (1 week). Prefer rotation of 1 month.
RNs: min 4 working days, prefer two weeks
Case by case basis for everyone depending on schedule fluctuations
Chiropractor: cannot be credentialed. Therefore they can’t legally work here.

CLINIC HOURS (as of March 20): Note, practitioners can expect to stay up to two hours later than advertised times to close out patients.
Algiers Clinic: Mon 1-5pm; Wed 10-5 pm; Thurs 1-5 pm; Sat 12-3 pm
LHOP: Wed 6-9 am, Sat 10-6pm
9th Ward Claiborne First Aid Clinic: Tu, Th, Sat 10 am - 4 pm
"Spring Break" Clinics at the Common Ground Relief sites are ongoing

The State of Louisiana has recently changed their regulation of acupuncture in such a way as to make it impossible for Acupuncturists Without Borders to continue to volunteer at the clinic. For more information and to petition the state to change their policy visit Acupuncturists Without Borders: Government Rule Change.

Non Medical/Therapist Volunteering
Our priority now is to integrate local residents into the clinic. If you are local , there are plenty of professional and non-professional tasks and jobs you can help with. The clinic wants you. If you are not local, are not a health worker and want to volunteer, our first suggestion is to contact the Common Ground Relief Collective who are incorporating many folks into their relief and recovery work.
